Powerful response to an outrageous history and shameful current attempts to bury it with the intent of exploiting the results. Question: is "segregation" [came slowly . . .] at the beginning of the second paragraph a typo?

Yes, that was an error. Not truly a typo. More like a fumble.

I really didn't appreciate the importance of his work until he started to wonder if it was worth his time and we started to talk about it. It came over me very slowly. Not as slowly as, say, integration came to Greenville, but - all the same - it took far longer than it ought to.
